Pickled Pee Rug

So… I found this 8×10 rug on Craigslist a couple of months ago for only $30! $30! (You usually can’t find anything above a 5×7 used for less than $150!) And it was the perfect colors, etc. for my dining room.

When my husband and I picked it up we were in a hurry, and it was already rolled up for us; so we didn’t bother to unroll it first. We hauled it into the house and placed it with the other rolled rugs. It wasn’t until a few weeks later that I started getting wafts of urine and we realized it was coming from that rug! I had professional carpet cleaners come out a few weeks ago and that was the first time I unrolled it. The smell was nauseating! Some little mutt had peed all over the thing. I asked the professionals to take special care with getting that rug clean, but it didn’t do the trick. Still determined to use it, we purchased two giant containers of Nature’s Miracle “Urine Destroyer” and soaked the thing, but that just resulted in an even weirder combined odor. As a last result, we hauled the rug outside and doused it with 10 gallons of vinegar! Twice! (Yep, that’s 20 GALLONS OF VINEGAR!)

Now it smells like pickled pee! It actually is a little better, though, and I’m hoping once the vinegar does it’s work and evaporates, we’ll be able to Febreeze the heck out of it and it will finally be useable. So much for an “amazing deal”!
